HOME SECURITYALARM SYSTEMS by Frank Fourchalk
A question that I regularly get asked is, "Would you recommend an alarm system?" My reply is always the same, "Of course". However there are certain things to consider when thinking about purchasing an alarm system. The first thing is an alarm should always be used in conjunction with good environment and physical security. Alarms are designed to detect an unauthorized entry and to limit your losses. They are the final line of defense in securing your home.
It is important that you the customer are aware that it is mandatory for anyone selling or installing alarms in British Columbia to be licensed under the Security Programs Division. This applies to locksmiths or anyone in the security business. It is a requirement for your security professional to carry this government license at all times. It is a good idea to get two or three quotes so you can make a good decision on which system will work best for you.
Alarm systems come in two types, those that sound an audible horn or siren to scare off intruders and those, which are silent and send an alarm message to a monitoring station. It is possible to combine the two and as well a fire alarm or panic circuit can be added.
Audible alarms are most often installed where economy is the primary requirement, while monitored alarms provide enhanced security. Available communication media include digital communicators (dial-up telephone network) direct wire (high security) and various related signaling techniques.
Some of the modern devices used today in alarm systems are:
Magnetic contacts; magnetically activated switches activated when doors or windows are opened.
Photoelectric beams; invisible light beams which are triggered when interrupted.
Audio detectors; sound detectors activated by intruder noise or breaking glass.
Ultrasonic detectors; devices activated when an intruder disturbs the generated pattern of waves.
Microwave detectors; similar to ultrasonic but 'radar' waves are used.
Passive infrared detectors; these detect changes in infrared energy caused by body heat.
You may or may not need such a wide range of devices. That is where professional advice from your licensed security company is highly recommended.
When considering the installation of any type of security system, check with your local police department, Better Business Bureau and any other information source to ensure the company selected is reputable and will provide the services quoted at a reasonable cost.
