FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MISSING IN ACTION ON CONDOS
It's time for Ottawa to follow B.C.'s lead
OTTAWA-Today James Moore, Member of Parliament for Port Moody-Coquitlam-Port Coquitlam, reacted to the announcement that the British Columbia government will launch a task force to investigate the leaky condo situation.
Said Moore: "Today we've seen a firm commitment from the government of B.C. to deal with this issue. A couple of weeks ago, a B.C. Supreme Court decision made the City of Delta pay $3 million for leaky condo repairs to a complex in Ladner. It seems everyone has their wallet out except the feds."
Added Moore: "Ottawa's stunning lack of interest in helping B.C.'s leaky condo owners smacks of discrimination. Earlier this summer Public Works Minister Alfonso Gagliano quietly announced federal compensation of $3,500 for every Montreal area homeowners with pyrite damage to their homes, effectively paying 25% of a federal-provincial compensation package. But the federal Liberal government is unwilling to give similar treatment to leaky condo owners in B.C. In fact Minister Gagliano has grown so arrogant and dismissing of this issue that he has yet to even respond to my letter demanding an explanation for the discriminatory treatment to B.C. homeowners."
Concluded Moore: "When the House resumes on September 17th I will continue to raise this issue in Ottawa, hold the Liberals account for their inaction, and remind the government that discrimination in any form is simply not tolerable in this country."
