AUTO SECURITY by Frank Fourchalk

Thieves, who get their kicks from ripping people off, driving around at high speed and damaging personal property, steal most vehicles. Unfortunately this problem is getting worse and costing ICBC policyholders millions each year. It is a well-known fact that thieves target vehicles that pose little or no resistance to a smooth getaway.

If you park your vehicle in a carport, underground parkade, residential street or driveway, you are definitely at risk. Don't think it's only new vehicles these thrill seekers are after, statistics show that most vehicles being stolen are the six to ten year old family type.

There are a good many types of vehicle anti-theft devices on the market, however I will concentrate on three main types: mechanical devices, alarms, and electronic immobilizers.

Steering wheel, locking bars are the most common type of mechanical locking device. These lock the steering wheel in place, so even if the steering wheel is turned, you cannot drive the vehicle away. They are a great visual deterrent but be careful in selecting a mechanical device, as there are a few inferior models on the market. It is a good idea to visit your local locksmith and get information or a demonstration of the different products on the market.

Some other types of mechanical devices are:

Audible alarms strictly deter vehicle break-ins, but it is important to note that they do not prevent a thief from driving off with your vehicle.

Electronic immobilizers offer the highest degree of vehicle protection. These anti-theft devices require a special key or a small electronic device, usually attached to your key chain, to start the vehicle. When activated, the immobilizing system shuts off one or more parts of the engine's electronic system such as the starter, ignition or fuel system. This disables the engine and prevents thieves from stealing the vehicle.

Electronic immobilization systems are divided into two groups, passive and active. Passive systems automatically activate when you turn the ignition off. You don't have to remember to turn the system on. (This is the best type because active systems require you to turn them on.

Since passive electronic immobilizers provide the highest level of protection, the installation and use of these devices can save you money on your Auto plan insurance. See your Auto plan broker for more details.
